E.ON partners with GreenWave Reality to develop ‘Smart Homes’, Starting in Milton Keynes

One of the UK’s leading energy suppliers, E.ON, has today (MONDAY) announced it has completed the first 12 months of a partnership with GreenWave Reality to offer residents the opportunity to stop wasting energy, improve their comfort, and even live a more convenient life while reducing their carbon footprint.
Developed with GreenWave Reality, the global smart home innovator, E.ON’s technology solution allows E.ON customers to measure individual electrical appliance usage through smart plugs, meaning participants can easily monitor and control the energy use of their TV, PC, washing machine or fridge.
Over the last 12 months, E.ON has been trialling the Smart Home technology in 75 homes in the Thinking Energy project in Milton Keynes. Through partnership with Milton Keynes Council and National Energy Foundation (NEF), the insights and data collected have provided an insight into households’ behaviour towards energy. At the mid-point in the two year trial, over three-quarters of people have changed the way they use energy in their homes, some saving up to £200 off their annual electricity bill.

The groundbreaking technology works for both gas and electricity via E.ON smart meters and provides a wide range of interactive tools and tips on energy use. Presenting minute-by-minute visibility in their energy use, the trial households are able to securely view the data via a web browser, tablet and smartphone app.
Benefitting from an engaging online portal interface which is visually appealing and easy to understand, Milton Keynes participants can customise their settings to suit everyday behaviours and report that they are benefiting from the following:
• Informed decisions – understand the financial cost of using individual electrical appliances and unravel energy myths – as an example, the cost of a typical washing machine cycle works out on average to be approximately 13p per wash, cheaper than the cost of washing tablets
• Seeing is believing – people can reduce energy wastage and save money as they’re able to see how much energy is being wasted – participants are able to locate secret energy guzzlers such as leaving PCs on standby, set-top TV boxes, underfloor heating and Hi-Fi amps
• Control – participants can schedule groups of selected devices to go on or off to suit their lifestyles, including home, away and night smart controls
• Personalise – households can create their own activity groups to suit their needs, examples have included ‘homework hour’ where parents can turn off games consoles remotely and get their children focused on their school assignments
• Budget – online Energy Coach to help set goals and monthly budgeting which is tracked by the system to enable customers to see if they’re going over and above their desired usage
• Learn – the Energy Coach rewards users for their progress and accomplishments by way of an Energy Passport that tracks their achievements and allows users to share their success over social networks such as Facebook and Twitter
To further educate consumers on energy conservation in a fun and engaging manner, E.ON has developed an Interactive Home that consumers can access online and learn of many energy saving opportunities already existing in their own homes. By visiting this virtual home, users can examine the interior and exteriors of a typical home, enter different rooms and click on various devices to uncover valuable energy saving information that helps to reduce consumption in an entertaining way.
In the near future, the solution will be extended to include Smart Thermostats which integrate seamlessly into the E.ON platform. The Smart Thermostats can be controlled via the same intuitive interfaces running via the browser and smartphone app, allowing people to remotely control temperatures throughout the home. Solar PV, Smart appliances, Electric Vehicles and Connected Lighting are also being explored.
